Your first Spanish words
Recognize a greeting, say yes or no, and use polite words.

You do not need to know a single Spanish word to start. Hola means hello. Listen to Hola, look at the greeting illustration, and repeat it slowly. Adiós means goodbye. Start by recognizing the sound; you do not have to read quickly.
Sí means yes; no means no. The accent in sí distinguishes it from si (if). Gracias means thank you. Por favor means please. These small expressions are useful by themselves: “Sí, gracias” means “Yes, thank you.”
Spanish vowel sounds are fairly consistent: a is roughly ah, e is eh, i is ee, o is oh, and u is oo. English spelling hints are only approximations, so use the recordings as your model. The h in hola is silent. Spanish uses opening question and exclamation marks: ¿ … ? and ¡ … !.
Practice in this order: listen, say the word, read its English meaning, then listen again. Repeat Hola, Sí, No, Gracias, and Por favor before trying a sentence.
